Welcome speech template for an event, conference or meeting

Updated November 2, 2026 · Anthony Delmotte

In short. An opening welcome should take two to three minutes, about 200 to 300 words: greet everyone, thank sponsors and organisers by name, say why this event matters, give the practical details, and introduce the first speaker.

The template

Replace everything in [brackets] before you read. Each paragraph becomes one card. 90 words as written, before you fill in the brackets.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to [event name]. I’m [your name], [your role].

It’s wonderful to see [number] of you here [in the room and online].

A big thank you to [organisers, sponsors, volunteers], who made today possible.

We’re here because [why the event exists, in one sentence].

By the end of today, I hope you’ll leave with [what attendees will gain].

A few practical things: [schedule, breaks, Wi-Fi, where to ask questions].

Now it’s my pleasure to introduce our first speaker, [name], [one line about them]. Please welcome [name]!

How to make it yours

  1. Thank by name

Name the sponsors and the two or three people who did the real work.

  2. Practicalities last

People only remember logistics said right before they need them.

  3. Keep your energy up

You set the tone of the whole day: smile, slow down, look at the room.

  4. Introduce, don’t present

One line about the next speaker; let them speak for themselves.
