Birthday speech template (for a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th)
Updated November 2, 2026 · Anthony Delmotte
In short. A birthday speech lasts two to three minutes, about 300 words: welcome everyone, tell one story about the person, say what makes them special, and raise a toast. For a milestone (30, 40, 50, 60), one nod to the age is plenty.
The template
Replace everything in [brackets] before you read. Each paragraph becomes one card. 108 words as written, before you fill in the brackets.
Good evening, everyone, and thank you for coming to celebrate [name].
For those who don’t know me, I’m [your name], [your relationship to them] for [number] years.
[Number] years. That’s [a light comparison: a lot of birthdays, a lot of candles, a lot of questionable fashion choices].
When I think of [name], I think of [one quality].
[Your story: three or four sentences about a moment that shows that quality.]
That’s [name]: [what the story says about them].
[Name], thank you for [what they bring to the people here]. [One sincere sentence.]
So please raise your glasses. To [name]: happy birthday, and [a wish for the year ahead]!
How to make it yours
One story, not a roast
Teasing is fine in small doses; end on something warm.
Mention the age once
One joke about the number is enough. The person matters more than the milestone.
Include the room
A line about the friends and family present makes everyone part of it.
Read it, don’t wing it
A phone with the text following your voice is easier to handle than a crumpled sheet.
