Free online autocue: read your script on screen, no download

Updated October 27, 2026 · Anthony Delmotte

Short answer. Autocue is the British word for a teleprompter. Our free online autocue runs in any browser: paste your script, press Start and read. It scrolls at a steady speed or follows your voice, with no download and no sign-up.

How to use it

  1. Open the online autocue and paste your script. Short paragraphs read best.
  2. Pick a speed: 130 to 150 words per minute suits most people on camera. Or tick Follow my voice so the text moves only when you speak.
  3. Press Start and go full screen. Space pauses, ← and → change the speed, Esc stops.

Autocue or teleprompter?

Same thing. Autocue was a British company whose name became the everyday word in the UK, Ireland and Australia, the way people say Hoover for a vacuum cleaner. In the US, people say teleprompter. Broadcasters also say prompter or cue.

With autocue glass

A professional autocue reflects the screen in a sheet of glass in front of the lens, so the text appears mirrored. Turn on Mirror and it reads the right way round in the glass. You can build one yourself: see our DIY teleprompter guide.

Free autocue on a phone

A browser autocue works on a phone, but it can’t film you at the same time. To record with your script right under the front camera, SmoothCue on iPhone follows your voice and saves the take to Photos.
