In short. A graduation speech lasts four to six minutes, about 450 to 750 words. Thank teachers and families, share one memory everyone in the class will recognise, offer one lesson you learned, and end with a look forward and a call to your classmates.
The template
Replace everything in [brackets] before you read. Each paragraph becomes one card. 133 words as written, before you fill in the brackets.
Good [morning / afternoon], [principal, teachers], families, friends, and my fellow graduates.
I’m [your name], and it’s an honour to speak for the class of [year].
First, thank you. To our teachers, for [one specific thing]. To our families, for [one specific thing]. We know we didn’t get here alone.
[Number] years ago, we [a shared memory from the first year: a place, an event, a feeling].
Since then, we’ve [two or three things the class went through together].
If I had to name one thing I learned here, it’s [your lesson]. [One sentence or story that explains it.]
Today we go in different directions: [examples: jobs, universities, travel, things nobody has figured out yet].
Wherever we go, I hope we [a wish for your classmates].
Congratulations, class of [year]. We did it.
How to make it yours
One lesson, really yours
A real story beats a famous quote. If you use a quote, keep it to one.
Speak to the whole class
Pick memories everyone shares, not just your friends.
Respect the clock
Schools usually set a time limit; time yourself with the speech time calculator.
Look up at the end
Know your last two sentences by heart and say them to the room.
