How to write a video script that sounds natural when read aloud

Updated October 23, 2026 · Anthony Delmotte

Short answer. Use a four-part structure (hook, promise, content, call to action), write short sentences in the words you’d actually say, put one idea per paragraph, and read it aloud before recording. Cut anything you stumble on.

A structure that works

  1. Hook (1 to 2 sentences): a question, a surprising fact or the result.
  2. Promise (1 sentence): what the viewer will get by staying.
  3. Content: three to five points, one paragraph each.
  4. Call to action (1 sentence): one thing to do next, not three.

Rules for a script you’ll read aloud

  • Short sentences. If you need a breath in the middle, split it.
  • Spoken words. “Use” not “utilise”, “so” not “therefore”.
  • One idea per paragraph. Paragraphs become cards on a prompter and natural cut points in editing.
  • Numbers as you say them. “About two thousand” is easier to read than “1,984”.
  • Mark emphasis. Bold or capitals on the word you want to stress.

Check the length

At a normal pace you say about 140 words a minute. Paste the script into the speech time calculator to check it fits the length you’re aiming for.

Read it aloud, then cut

Reading aloud reveals every sentence that only works on paper. Most first drafts lose 20% here, and get better for it. When you’re ready, our guide on reading without looking like you’re reading covers the delivery.

FAQ

How long should a 1-minute video script be?

About 140 words at a normal pace, 120 to 160 depending on how fast you speak.

Can I use ChatGPT to write a video script?

Yes, as a first draft. Then rewrite it in your own words and read it aloud: AI drafts tend to have long sentences that sound written.
