How many words per minute do people speak? (with a 1-minute word count)
Updated October 23, 2026 · Anthony Delmotte
Short answer. Most people speak 130 to 160 words per minute on camera, so a 1-minute video holds about 140 words, 30 seconds about 70, and 5 minutes about 700. Presentations run slower, 110 to 130, because of pauses.
Typical speaking rates
- Slow, presentations, speeches: 110 to 130 words per minute.
- Conversational, most videos: 130 to 160.
- Fast, short-form social video: 160 to 180 and above.
- Silent reading, for comparison: about 238 words per minute for an adult.

How to measure your own pace
Take a 140-word paragraph, start a timer and read it out loud the way you would on camera. Under a minute means you speak faster than average; over means slower. Do it twice: nerves make the first try fast.
Why your video is longer than planned
Breaths, emphasis, pauses for effect and the small improvisations that make you sound human all add time. Plan for 10 to 15% more than the raw word count, or let a prompter follow your voice so the pace is always yours.
