How to write good cue cards

  1. One idea per card

A card is a step in your talk, not a page of text. If you can’t sum up a card in three words, split it.

  2. Keywords for speeches, full sentences for video

On stage you glance down: keywords are enough. On camera you read, so write the sentences out in full and keep them short.

  3. Big, bold, numbered

Print large enough to read at arm’s length and number every card. If they fall, you’re back in order in seconds.

  4. Mark your pauses

An empty line or a slash where you breathe. The card sets the rhythm, not your memory.

FAQ

What size are cue cards?

The classic cue card is a 3 × 5 inch index card. 4 × 6 inch gives room for bigger text, and A6 (105 × 148 mm) is the closest size in countries that use A paper.

How many words should go on a cue card?

For a speech, 15 to 40 words: keywords and the odd full sentence. For reading on camera, up to 60 words in large type. Above that, split the card.

How do I print cue cards?

Press “Print or save as PDF”. Each card is printed on its own page at the size you picked: print on index cards, or on plain paper and cut along the edge. To keep a file, choose “Save as PDF” as the printer.

Can I use the cards on my phone instead?

Yes. Open them in the free online teleprompter, or in SmoothCue on iPhone, which films you while the text follows your voice.

Is my script uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
